It is important for us to keep ourselves hydrated inside and out. Dry skin is caused by lacking of moisture in the skin. It makes the person uncomfortable about his appearance as well as it can be itchy! It can also affect one’s confidence about his appearance. Having a dry skin is caused by different factors such as environmental, bad nutrition and lifestyle.

You can use a non-petroleum jelly and use it for about three to four times a week. Exfoliate your skin and moisturize it. In treating dry skin, exfoliation is the first key. The skin can contain dead skin cells and in time, it can build up and could become unresponsive with every lotion and different creams. So, you have to get rid of dead skin cells first. Try using body scrubs and other regimen with exfoliating formulas. Then, you can apply now a moisturizer or an old vegetable shortening as an alternative. Shortening is made up from pure soybean oil and can make your skin soft, smooth and soothed.

In preventing dry skin, you must consider the following tips:

You have to keep your body hydrated; drink at least eight glasses of pure water every day. Drink more if you are active with different physical activities. It will make your skin and body properly hydrated. Try to prevent foods that can dry your skin such as foods rich in caffeine and avoid drinking alcohol and smoking. Get enough proper sleep for at least about six to eight hours every night.

Protect your skin from environmental elements such as the wind, heat of the sun, cold, smoke and some others. This will make your skin to exacerbate and get dry. With this, do not forget to apply moisturizer after every bath or before exposing your skin to harsh elements. Some of them include lavender and chamomile that will also help your skin to feel refreshed.

In taking a shower, after you have soaked for five minutes in the shower, you can add some oil to your bath water. Add a tablespoon of an almond, olive or jojoba oil to your bath water. This way, it will absorb moisture. Also, avoid or at least limit the consumption of hot water; avoid taking baths for long time as they can dehydrate the skin especially in the cold weather.

Avert using harsh soaps. It could only make your skin extremely dry and sometimes causes flakiness. Use only gentle cleansers or something that is hypoallergenic. Use moisturizing soap and apply a toner after every wash to your face. Limit washing your face like at least twice or thrice a day only.
